Sara’s Place is a beautiful restaurant located in the quiet, picturesque village of Gates Mills.
The space and the food are rustic yet modern, with exposed brick next to weathered wood in the dining room and pulled pork sliders next to cod in a citrus buerre blanc on the menu. The culinary mission at Sara’s Place is one that we also preach at The Olive Scene: keep your food simple by highlighting the best possible ingredients.
This focus drives owner David Gromelski and executive chef Richard Cunningham to seek out fresh, local ingredients for their dishes and local businesses to collaborate with.
On any given day, their menu might include tomatoes from Rainbow Farms in Madison, swiss chard from Case Western Reserve Farms, peppers from Eddy’s Farm in Chesterland, assorted ice creams from Mitchell’s in Cleveland, and vinaigrettes made from The Olive Scene’s oils and vinegars.
Gromelski stumbled upon The Olive Scene’s Chagrin Falls location and purchased some of our olive oils and balsamic vinegars to play with at home. He loved the quality and versatility of the ingredients, so he decided to incorporate them into the menu at Sara’s Place as well. Gromelski tells us that their “favorite dressing right now is the Sicilian Lemon Balsamic Vinegar with the Basil Olive Oil, and we add pesto.” This summer, they used this vinaigrette to dress a beautiful salad of fresh Ohio sweet corn, local tomatoes, and shrimp for what became one of their best-selling appetizers.
Sara’s Place is located in a community-focused area, which translates into a very loyal following for the restaurant. Their regulars know to ask about what’s fresh and local from the day’s delivery, which gives Gromelski and Cunningham ample opportunity to show off the products that come from their collaborations with local farms. Their freshest seasonal produce is on display in a window that opens into the kitchen. People will often pause to strike up a conversation with the kitchen staff to understand how they’re preparing the day's beautiful local finds.
Cunningham laughs about how comfortable these regulars are in the restaurant, “We had a couple of regulars who were across the street fishing. One day, right before lunch, they came in and were like, ‘Can you cook this fish for us? We just caught it.’ It’s the kind of thing you can comfortably do down here. And people will also bring us stuff from their garden and say ‘We have family coming in tonight, and we just picked these.’ And we’ll put something together for them.”
That’s true enthusiasm for farm-to-table cuisine, and The Olive Scene is proud to be a part of that movement!
